Dr. Germon "Mama G" Miller

Askari Mwalimu Jamala Maisha

Dr. Germon Marie Miller, a math educator, certified cultural historian, military team coach, international motivational speaker & crisis intervention specialist, established the AKERU Afrikan Cultural Arts and Discipline Sciences Program in 1983 Philadelphia, PA. Now 20 years later there are four national and international chapters. Affectionately known as "Mama G" to the youth in crisis that she serves, Dr. Miller has encouraged AKERU members to travel world wide sharing historical information that the Afrikan combative systems evolved into the art of Capoeria via slavery to Brazil then eventually developing into break dancing.

The daughter of a West Indian Mother and a Jewish Father, Dr. Miller was blessed to attend the prestigious Cecilian Academy for her elementary/secondary education. In addition to extensive academics, she was trained in classical ballet, piano & theater. She continued her pursuit of the arts throughout her undergraduate studies. Even as a single parent of two sons she incorporated the fine arts into her home environment.

After 22 years of the classical arts the magnet that drew Dr. Miller to the Combative Science was that of the necessity to survive. The personal tragedy of near death due to domestic violence was the catalyst that thrust her into the world of martial arts. She began with Taekwondo & Northern Shaolin systems. She excelled quickly & was invited to join an elite Afrikan fighting school in North Philadelphia...The Vita Saana System.

Under the tutelage of the founder of Vita Saana, Dr. Miller embraced a new identity... Mwalimu Jamala Maisha. Her special destiny in the martial arts had begun. Mwalimu Jamala then spent the next 25 years training in the Afrikan sciences & competing all over the world.

In concurrence with her pursuits as an accomplished tactician, Dr. Miller is also a pathfinder in the area of youth crisis intervention through math education. Several of her programs are still in effect today since 1978.

Mama G believes that the hardships of life are to develop the gifts that God has given us especially to help others. Her experience as a domestic violence survivor set the course outline for her most requested seminar around the world--The Women's Empowerment Program. Dedicated to her roommate from the women's shelter that was killed by her ex-husband, this workshop has given hope to women to regain their sovereignty.

"I am because they taught me", is the #1 mantra of Mama G. She acknowledges her mentors for their support. She thanks the Creators everyday for her Elders and their wisdom. Especially she gives the highest praises to: her Grandmother, Baba Ishangi & Grand patriarch Peter Urban who after a lifetime of service now embrace eternal peace. Mama G feels it is essential that we know our ancestors to keep their spirit alive with our voices.

Throughout the years she has had the opportunity to converse and train with individuals who have made this world a better place. Most special are the times that the members of AKERU have shared the glorious history with audiences around the world. From the competition floor to the school gymnasium the applause can be heard over the last two decades. AKERU stands for excellence & dedication.

For a parent to live long enough to see their children reach their goals is a gift from God. Mama G proudly acknowledges that her legacy has been passed on to the next generation of pathfinders. The instructors and apprentices of AKERU are dedicated to keeping the principles of the Afrikan traditions available for every community especially the youth. There is no doubt that AKERU will be known to future generations!

Dr. Miller gives special recognition to the Sisters of Saint Joseph who were her educators at the Cecilian Academy in Philadelphia throughout her 11 years of primary & secondary schooling. Her matriculation at the University of Pennsylvania and Antioch University yielded advanced degrees in Crisis Intervention Mathematics and Human Services with a specialization in Youth & Women’s Programs. She entered the 21st Century by acquiring her Ph.D. in Behavioral Sciences from the International Council of Higher Education Exchange Program in Germany.

Enhancing the productivity of her presentations required that Dr. Miller pursue an additional career in the study of the Afrikan Cultural Sciences. She was bestowed with the title of Milinza Ahadithi/Cultural Historian after over 20 years of study.

A 20 year Motivational Speaker/Educator at over 180 schools, community centers & faith based organizations reaching over 36,000 people.
